Nick’s wordplay and razor-sharp lyrics shine bright with the twang-friendly tones of Los Straitjackets behind him. The limited edition release features two new originals from Nick, “Lay It On Me Baby” and “Don’t Be Nice to Me,” alongside a cover of Dorsey Burnette’s “Here Comes That Feeling” (made famous by Brenda Lee). Los Straitjackets backed Lowe on 2018’s well-received Tokyo Bay / Crying Inside EP (Conan O’Brien personally chose them to perform “Tokyo Bay” on the show’s final week of music bookings, before changing to its new 30-minute format), as well as last year’s Love Starvation / Trombone EP which featured three new Nick originals plus a cover of an obscure Phil Spector-produced gem, “Raincoat in the River.”Ģ020 finds Lowe offering EP #3, Lay It On Me, where he is once again joined by his gang of masked musicians, Los Straitjackets. That’s Los Straitjackets, America’s beloved masked men of surf-and-spy guitar instrumentals. I miss that rapport, having somebody to say, ‘This is terrible’ or ‘This is great.’ Losing them really knocked me off my bike, and I thought, ‘I think I’ve sort of had enough of this. “The three of us were always able to discuss the work at hand without worry of offending each other. “They were my two closest friends,” Lowe says. Both had been with him since his career renaissance in the mid-1990s. So you think, ‘Why would I put myself through making another record?’”īut beyond those practical considerations, Lowe faced a larger emotional impasse – the untimely deaths of his two longtime creative partners, drummer Bobby Irwin and producer Neil Brockbank, in 20, respectively. You can travel in quite a degree of comfort and be nicely thanked for your efforts. Also, the live thing is so easy to do now. Never mind that nobody really buys records anymore. Plus, to make the kind of records I know how to make is incredibly expensive. So I wasn’t exactly laden with new material. I can spend quite a long time fiddling around with some little two-and-a-half minute tune, then finally go, ‘Oh, I’ve heard this before so many times,’ and just drop it. I write songs all the time, but the thing about getting older is that I’m extremely self-critical. “First, I’ve never been particularly prolific. ![]() “I’d been dodging the thought of making more records for a few reasons,” Lowe says. But suddenly, the affable rocker-next-door felt he had to step back to take stock of his situation. ![]() As detailed in a lengthy retrospective feature in Rolling Stone this past December, Lowe had ridden into 2018 astride a storied forty-plus year career as an artist, producer and one of the most-revered songwriters of his generation. The album combines the tracklisting of Jesus of Cool and Pure Pop for Now People into one studio album.Three years ago, Nick Lowe had almost convinced himself that his days of making records were over. Now, for the first time ever, Wireless World is being issued on LP more than 40 years after first being reported. While Jesus of Cool and Pure Pop for Now People gave Nick his rightful place on the power pop plateau, the whispers of Wireless World faded away as mysteriously as they appeared. ![]() This resulted in one paper "exclusively revealing" to readers that Nick's solo debut would be titled Wireless World. But then they thought "why stop at two titles?" Jake and Nick made it their goal to feed as many conflicting stories as possible to journalists, including giving fake album titles for Nick's debut to interviewers. Jake and Nick loved that the album would have two titles because it would lead to confusion. Jake and Nick had already learned that the album title, Jesus of Cool, would not be appropriate for the US release on Columbia stateside it would be known as Pure Pop for Now People. In true Stiff Records fashion, Jake Riviera (Stiff's founder) and Nick Lowe were looking for any opportunity to mess with music journalists ahead of the release of Nick's debut solo record.
